On my Dell, I discovered that I could boot from the DSL CD, version 3.4, with just "fb1024x768" as the only cheat-code (no "dsl" first, or anything else), and the display came up full size and clean.
If that works for you as well, you can make the fb... part work like a normal cheat-code by preceeding it with "xmodule=fbdev". Here's an example line, this time starting with the "dsl" label:
dsl fromhd=hda1 xmodule=fbdev fb1024x768 home=hda3 <more cheat-codes, if needed>
