Check if anything lights up when U connect the cable ;-)
If not...use hub,switch, or crossover

try to ping each other computer
Or set static IP....in XP it's easy and under dsl type netcardconfig as root
As gateway on dsl use the IP of xp box

A Crossover cable should work, or a hub.

Hold the ends of your LAN cable up to a lamp.

If the connector is clear plastic, you can see the order of the individual wire colors. For example, you might see (from left to right) brown, brown with a white stripe, blue, blue with a white stripe, green, green with a white stripe, etc

If both connectors look exactly the same in that the colors from left to right are in the exact same order, then you are the proud owner of a Straight-through cable.  If the order is not exactly the same then you probably own a Crossover cable.

Good Luck.

Well thanks guys I got it working :) After everything I did I noticed that my system has installed and was seeing 2 RJ-45 jacks so I checked it out turns out I was sharing the MB jack instead of the cards :P Thanks a lot for your help guys, I learned a lot. (filled a page of notes)
