I don't know that this will help you at all... and I'm a noob with small hardware... but I have ben able to get an ESS1689 running under DSL. Mine is in a 10 year old Compaq laptop. It might be worth a try for you as well.
The console command that worked for me is:
Code Sample | modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330

I learned about it from this thread: Sound on es1869
The key points are that you know what the BIOS settings for your card are. I was lucky, I had reset the BIOS to factory settings before trying the above and my values all lined up exactly as the thread told.
