outer!s, mplayer should do the same, as long as it was compiled with '--enable-network' and '--enable-ftp'. Since VLC is similarly based on FFmpeg as MPlayer, the range of natively supported formats is the same. Some files just will not play without external codecs. VLC's standard GUI is wxGTK - and wxGTK supports both GTK1 and GTK2. I've tried linking VLC with wxGTK1, but sadly, the interface.. (a screenshot will 'speak a thousand words' - it was unusable)
