DSL Ideas and Suggestions :: turn my old pc ->

Maybe this should be in the mydsl requests...

I would love to turn one of my olp pcs into an answering machine for my home phone (with the help of DSL of course).

sounds cool, do you mean like the "press X for ..." etc? ,because that has unlimited possabilities.

It'd be cool to have all the phones in your house hooked up, eg "press 3 for john" and it rings his phone etc

Also you could get it to do caller ID, i have a friend who is making a VB program to do this, even though he knows there are existant ones. And .OCX files (if you know what that is) that automate programming such things. He is just doing it for the fun of programming...

I was thinking more along the lines of voicemail, with multiple mailboxes, etc. and Caller ID would be real cool!

I didn't think about it but yeah..... a DSL phone reciptionist would be very useful (mostly for a small business, unlkess you have that type of phone system at home).

What's a 'VB program'? I'm not sure what a .OCX file is but I'm curious.???

I've browsed around the net for just such a thing. I saw a couple of applications that run under window$, but I had to pass on that. I would love to see something like this as well.
VB - VisualBASIC

It's a programming language made by microsoft, its pretty easy to learn and use but has its limitations

an ".ocx" is the file extention of add-ons for vb that are often written in other programming languages and basically allow you to address complex problems in a more simple way.

So using vb with a ".ocx" extension allows you to take advantage of simple commands that most of the time you would have great trouble writing similar programs for in vb.

Anyway, this confirms that it IS possible to get caller ID from a computer if that helps at all.
