This is a rather old laptop, a toshiba 205cds. I got DSL to install on the hard drive correctly

yay. But my problem is when i run the audio config program... and i select the audio card taht i found to be in there the (ESS688) It decides to just close when i press enter after highlighting it... i'm off to work, check post later

I have a toshiba satellite 200cdt. With the same problem. AIDA16 shows it as having a SB16 or ESS AudioDrive. Niether modules seem to work and sometime seg fault.

Any ideas?

You can try "modprobe sb" ,...
but the ESS cards tend to not like the sb emulation mode in Linux..

Find out exactly what card you have..
An ESS 16xx , or an ESS 18xx , etc..
Look at dmesg ..
or
install gnu-utils, and run lspci to find out ..
or
run lsmod and see if it shows up there ..

Search the forums for the card name, as there are many
fixes for the various versions of ESS sound cards..

sndconfig bombs out on ESS cards..
