Hello all! I installed mplayer.dsl, and when i try to run it, the terminal shows me an "invalid instruction" error message and exits unexpectly.

I am running DSL on a AMD K6-2 500MHz.

Thanks

Yes, DSL's version of MPlayer fails to launch for some of us.  Someone else mentioned that it could be just on older computers, but I suspect it's due to the DSL version's processor optimisation.

The easy answer is to use Xine instead.  If you experience poor playback performance, disable the gui - this will make a difference, and just open your media files by right-clicking on the Xine splash screen.

You can install your own optimised version of MPlayer in DSL from deb files, but it's complex.
If you're determined, here goes -

Restore DSL's dpkg structure.

Get the MPlayer deb from Christian Marillat's unstable packages, the correct version optimised for your processor - ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/
Install as such -
dpkg -i --force-all mplayer-xxx.deb

The force-all option is used to ignore the many dependency problems the installer will complain about.  Not all the packages listed are strictly necessary.
Now we just attempt to play a video file (I suggest an MPEG1 file), and install the library packages MPlayer complains are missing.

Some of these packages will be available from the Marillat site, some from Debian's unstable section - http://packages.debian.org/unstable/
and the following files I just copied from Knoppix 3.4 -
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2
/usr/lib/libXv.so.1.0

I can't remember where I got these divx files from -
/usr/lib/libdivxdecore.so.0.0.0
/usr/lib/libdivxencore.so.0.0.0
/usr/local/include/decore.h
/usr/local/include/encore2.h

I have built a working mplayer386.dsl ..
It still needs some tweaking to play dvd's,
but seems to work ok for other files in my tests..

I will place it in the repository shortly for further testing.
