I'm running as user dsl and I'm running from the CD (no HD recognition, so no way to install to the hard drive).
So far my experience on this brand new very good machine has been a complete cluster: no sound, no network card recognition, and no hard drive recognition. People told me "yeh it's there, look under the slot for the HD, Windows XP is no problem if your only reading from the drive. We'll, it is a problem, I only see a 0 for the name of the hard drive, and it says the drive is busy when I try to mount it under the slot. The network card config under the menu can't find any network card, but I know it works because I can use it now in XP. If the sound works, I can say I'll keep trying, hell, if one of those three worked I'd keep going. Is Dell trying to crush Linux by making the new machines incompatible with dsl? I've been quietly using dsl for about 4 months on my old machine, but it was too old and didn't handle some of the bigger apps.
Thanks so much for the help. Sorry to vent, but I'm frustrated.
