If you have a traditional hard install, you would need to unpack the downloaded xpdf.unc.

In other words, rename it to xpdf.uci and mount it.  From there you can copy the files from /opt/xpdf into the "regular" filesystem.  For example, if the binary is /opt/xpdf/usr/bin/xpdf, copy it to /usr/bin/xpdf

Thank you, Robert and Mikshaw.  I'm using DSL 3.2, frugal.

I will try to paste the relevant part of the Grub menu.lst.

The help for the xpdf on the desktop looks the same whether the .unc is in the mydsl directory or in the mydsl/optional directory before booting:
It says version 1.00, handles pdf file of the 1.4 kind?

kernel /boot/linux24 fromhd=/dev/hda3 root=/dev/hda3 quiet noacpi dma restore=hdb2 nopcmcia frugal host=asus write desktop=jwm

initrd /boot/minirt24

epdfview requires GTK+ version 2.6.0 or higher.
It won't be too long before no new GUI application will be suitable for inclusion in DSL, as developers continue to bulk up even the simplest of interfaces.
