I'm attempting to configure/install a printer driver, and get an error message about not being able to find cups.h,and thus "no cups-devl support". I have cups loaded, up and running. Any solutions? (note: I finally got libusb installed, so this is the latest barrier). I loaded cups from MyDsl, in addition to apt-get; also ran updates. Thanks

Edit: My girlfriend just read my post, and informed me that support for an 'h' cup is a little too much to ask for.

I intended to help you with this advice, but got surprisingly this error message:

server not available...

2nd possibility: try to configure your printer with apsfilter (e.g. the printer utility in the DSL menu), and look at http://www.linuxprinting.org/ in order to check out the right driver for your printer.

The link worked for me, although I've noticed the server goes down fairly often.

Cups and Apsfilter don't work for my printer (a HP 940C deskjet plugged into my USB port on a Dell laptop) because no device shows up on any path (/dev/usb/lp0, etc.....). Thus, I've attempted to build a driver, HPLIP, hoping that the printerdevice will show up on a USB port. Cups is installed (although it can't load a printer driver due to no printer device being found). When attempting to configure HPLIP, I get the error about not finding CUPS support. Perhaps I need to export a correct path?? I have no idea whether a device will show up even if I do manage to configure and install the driver. I was hoping LIBUSB would take care of the problem, but it did not.

The printer works when I load Knoppix live CD. Maybe there's a way to copy some info over to DSL.

Hi jepeters,

please correct me if I understand you wrong, but apsfilter doesn't show you a device; it shows you only paths that are numbered, and you have to enter a number in order for apsfilter to take your input into account and set up the corresponding path (=which corresponds to the number you entered). These paths are various, generally one or two for lpt and one or two for usb.

I don't think that you can copy what you want from knoppix to dsl because of dependencies.

After choosing the number (eg., "1" for parallel/usb), it asks for the path (eg., /dev/usb/lp0). When testing, I get an error message that it can't find a device on that (or any other) path; same problem occurs using CUPS.

I think you're right regarding dependencies. I'm hoping to find the magic library or driver that makes it work (just for the learning experience; I could always boot up Knoppix and print out a file).
