I happened upon an old IBM 3153 terminal for free. Hooked it up to the serial port on my Compaq 3060  DSL box. The following line got it to work from the console:

getty ttyS0 38400 vt100

I was a surprised and happy newbie and happily logged in and even used lnyx to go out onto the net with it.

Next, I added a line to inittab that reads:

T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 38400 vt100

After rebooting my terminal is not working. What am I doing wrong?

From your inittab liine, you only specified runlevels 2 & 3.
DSL has a default runlevel of 5. Try changing 23 to 2345.
