Before presuming, perhaps re-read Robert's post. He answered both your question and your hazarded guess.
The command in bold is what needs to be done to update .xinitrc, from within the new DSL system. This command assumes you are currently in /home/dsl. If you happen to have switched to a different directory, it would be cp /etc/skel/.xinitrc /home/dsl/ or cp /etc/skel/.xinitrc /home/dsl/.xinitrc The files in /home/dsl are automatically copied from /etc/skel at every boot, but are then overwritten by anything you have in your backup.
As he said, any files needed for a successful frugal upgrade other than KNOPPIX and boot files will be listed in the release announcement for each DSL version, in the "Site News" or "Release Candidates" forum. There should be no need to make assumptions.
