I have done a Hdd install on a computer with no internet connection (no ethernetport). I want to install a .deb file and the instructions say to use the dpkg. When I use that command it says "bash :Sudo: dpkg not a command". I restored the dpkg archive to the /var/lib/ directory. It still doesnt work and Im new to linux in general. Is there any way to get this to work?

Grab dsl-dpkg.* from MyDSL.

I cant do that, there is no internet connection on that computer. Is there another way to get this?

How did you get DSL on there?

If you really have no internet access on a machine that can transfer data, I guess you ccould ask someone to mail you it on a cd or something.

I did an install from a CD. I have the dpkg.tar.gz in the var/lib diretcory, but the next step of "apt-get update" doesnt work. I dont know where to go from there.

It looks like those instructions are outdated. Unless you are using some old version of DSL, you should grab the dsl-dpkg from MyDSL.

So, given with my warnings... if you want to continue, you'll need todo
tar zxvf dpkg.tar.gz

Note that apt-get update will NOT work, since I believe the default repos sources are downloaded from the internet (unless you have some repos cd's)

I did use what was on the link because I didnt know what to do. So is there any other way to get the file instead of myDSL? I am assuming that an internet connection is required for that.

Also if I did put in the dpkg.tar.gz, shouldnt I be able to use dpkg? I am not to worried about apt. All I want to do is to install a Dos emu for this that came in a .deb file. I really dont know much about linux.

Yes you need the internet as it is not provided on the cd. You can use any mirror, such as < http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/mydsl/ >

Which DSL version are you using?
Yes you can still use dpkg... though I'm unsure whether that package would still work for newer DSL versions.

Note that dosbox is also available in MyDSL if you need a dos emu.

I am using the newest version. I found all the files that I needed, thanks. Im not sure how to load the .dsl files though, do they need to be put in a certain directory? Sorry I have no idea what to do.

Is there way to run "apt-get update" without having Internet connection? If yes, what packages should be available on my hard drive? Where can I download these packages from and what files should be changed to use local repositories? I have 2 GB USB drive and fast Internet but not on the DSL box.

My system: DSL 3.2 Frugal loaded from HDD by LILO.
