Network card not recognized for Dell c610Forum: Laptops Topic: Network card not recognized for Dell c610 started by: dtf Posted by dtf on Nov. 09 2006,16:38
I got a Latitude c610 laptop for cheap and DSL boots fine on it but it does not find a network controller. When I enterred lspci I do not see an entry for the ethernet controller. I am not sure if this means there an installed network work controller that is not supported or it is missing or broken. When I researched this on the web it looks as if the network controller should be a 3c920 embedded chipset. I did try doing a modprobe using the 3com drivers I found but these complained about not finding any supporting controller.Does anyone have an idea how I can move forward? Thanks for the help. No response. Ok let me ask a different question. If I run lspci -v and I do not see an ethernet controller device listed can I assume there is a hardware problem with my network adaptor? Thanks. Posted by Ramik on Nov. 11 2006,20:04
Try seeing if the card module was loaded in the boot with "dmesg".For me their is a line saying:
Since your running a laptop their is the non-remote chance the module is simply missing, or nopcmcia is blocking it... Posted by dtf on Nov. 12 2006,14:32
The nopcmcia boot option does not help nor does dmesg identify a network controller of any type. Loading windowsXP also does not find a network device. So I have to believe my issue is a hardware problem. Using either a wireless or ethernet pcmcia card allows internet access with DSL so I will go with that solution.

Did you check your bios?If it's still under warranty, you could always send it in to be fixed. Posted by dtf on Nov. 13 2006,21:09
thehatsrule - it is a used laptop that I pick up cheap so it is not a big loss. I did check the bios and could not find anything related to the network adapter but I do not have a manual and could not find one online that explain the bios settings but most I can figure out. I was just trying to understand if the lspci command does not identify a hardware element is it safe to assume the hardware does not exist or is malfunctioning or can this also result from a missing or misconfigured driver. I am still not clear on this but in my case I think it is hardware as both linux and windows do not see a network adapter. |
