Im trying to add RealPlayer to the mix, so I can watch BBC News etc...So I downloaded the RealPlayer10GOLD.rpm and tried the standard =
sudo su
cd /dsl/home/
rpm -ivh *.rpm
and it gives me the finger!
Then I figured out dsl is a debian linux instead of just the fedora-like stuff I've been having a lot of luck with... So I downloaded:
realplayer_10.0.5-0.1_i386.deb package as well..
Where am I going wrong here? Any ideas or quick howto to send me in the right direction?

Yarr...If you be havin' enabled apt (Apps >> Tools >> Enable APT), do this
dpkg -i <whatever>.deb

There is a Real*.bin file for download,that works well with DSL as an installer..
Might give it a try..

I'll help ye matey.....Install the gtk2 .dsl file and update to gtk2 from the menu.
Download the bin file as ke4nt suggests. Set it executable by opening a shell and typing

| chmod +x RealPlayer10GOLD.bin |
Then run the program
| Code Sample |
| ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin |
Follow the prompts and you'll have it running.

I guess I'm not getting it - when it comes to installing GTK2...
Because I'm looking through synaptic, and it aint there...
Second I just did the ./ RealPlayer10GOLD.bin command, and I need dependencies for:
GTK+2.0 (libgtk-x11-2.0.so)
Pango 1.0 (libpango-1.0.so)
PangoX 1.0 (libpangox=1.0.so)
Like I say, I went looking for these files in synaptic, and they aren't there. I've tried apt-get install lib - this and lib that...
OK, where am I screwing this up... Maybe it's because I've had a bit too much Captn Morgan on this fine, fine day...

you need to get the gtk2 dsl from the mydsl repository, not from apt. Chris

Where is that? is this something I need to add to a repo? Like adding Dag.Wieers to my Fedora box?

Look here, in the gtk2 section, for a file called gtk-0705.dslThat is the one you need.. rt. click / save to your fav location.

Or, from a shell, type " mydsl-load gtk2-0705.dsl gtk2 "

This post is 18 months ago, but I have the same question, and maybe DSL 3.3 has overcome this, or there is a much easier solution.
I want to be able to watch the streaming media on the BBC site, news, programs etc .... what is the easiest way to enable dsl 3.3 to do this? Thanks.

When I go to watch a bbc streaming video on their web page, it give me the choice of windows media player or realplayer.
In mydsl - multimedia I don't see a realplayer package but I can see mplayer.dsl, mplayerplug-in.dsl, mplayer-xfree86.
Which of these do I need to install, or are ther other better ones in there? If so which would work? Thanks.
In mydsl - UCI I see realplayer.uci , but when I select it, the cancel/download box is empty, if I click download it just returns error (but there appears nothing in the box to download)
I have a frugal install and I read UCIs don't work with frugal (in this post about opera < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....l=opera > ). AM I wrong, or should it work, is the download site temporarily down, or is there another way to work it in frugal? or another option for internet steaming media? Thanks.

That thread was about UNC's, and not UCI's - and also that unc's works only in frugals (you must've misinterpreted it).Yes, the default mydsl site is temporarily down - select a mirror

For mplayer, you could try it, but I'm not sure if it comes with the realplayer codec... but it may be in some extension called something like codecpak.
Also, I'd suggest for you to test the playback on the standalone player first.

Latest mplayer-nogui supports (some) realaudio and realvideo codecs.I've tested it with some videos that use the COOK audio codec and works fine.
