DSL can do DVD, can't it?Im a noob and I am stuck trying to configure the css library( i think, libdvdcss?) and can't quite figure out how to use tcc to compile it. lil' help? Posted by ke4nt1 on Nov. 18 2004,07:33
1. Download the codecpak.dsl from the repository.2. Click-n-Run 3. Enjoy.. If your using DSL-0.8.4, use your myDSL desktop icon. Look in the "system" section. Click on the "Get It" button for the codecpak.dsl 73 ke4nt Posted by zmef420 on Nov. 18 2004,21:04
hey thanks but I already did that. the two error messages i get from xine are:"There is no input plugin available to handle dvd:/" and (/dev/dvd) i thought at first i needed css stuff and then guessed i needed a symbolic link(???) since my dvd is cdrom1. comments, questions, nasty remarks? I first deleted the /dev/dvd file/device, then I did make a symlink from my /dev/cdrom1 to /dev/dvd . Here is a screenie of my system playing a dvd LONG BEFORE the codecpak.dsl was ever available... the date on the screen shows 6/04 Only the symlink was needed to make this play. < http://www.creativesound.com/ares/xine3.jpg > 73 ke4nt Posted by zmef420 on Nov. 18 2004,23:53
should i be able to use mplayer.dsl?

Hmmm.. your reply invokes a number of human responses...1. Curiosity - Did the xine not perform for you ? 2. Sassy - Any 3 year old should be able to use mplayer.dsl .. 3. Technical - The mplayer is compiled for MMX/SSE use - P1/K5/K6 and earlier cpu's will not run .. 4. Directive - Without knowing more about your hardware/setup it's anyone's guess.. 5. Appreciation - "We have a nice consolation prize for you backstage, and Thanks for Playing ... W H E E L .... O F .... D S L ! " 73 ke4nt Posted by zmef420 on Nov. 19 2004,00:56
Sassy!thanks for your help, i had to figure out how to "symlink" . had to delete the file first. it's kind of jumpy even after enabling dma. i'm on a P3 550 and thought it would play fine. and btw, we tried, and my 3-year-old couldn't use your extension. so there. Using a smaller window seems to help with playback.Remember, there is no video graphics acceleration in DSL with the xvesa. I have found that the mplayer.dsl is smoother than xine, so give it a try.. should work with a P3-550 Now that the symlink is in place , it should function just like xine. I'll make a note that the recommended age is 8-to-80 73 ke4nt Posted by cbagger01 on Nov. 19 2004,05:16
Also,I suspect that Xvesa will give better performance than xfbdev X Windows servers So if you are using xfbdev, I would try out Xvesa and see if performance improves. Posted by pyronicte on Nov. 19 2004,08:59
HiHere it is the specs of Geexbox mplayer version that runs in a P1-MMX. Perhaps may help to improve multimedia playing in dsl. Also the source code is avalaible at this address: < http://www.geexbox.org/archzoom/devel@geexbox.org--2004/mplayer > MPlayer was originally written by rpᤠGere and has been extended and worked on by many more since then, see the AUTHORS file for an (incomplete) list.
