LAME encoder installation

Has anyone tried installing LAME in DSL?.
I am trying to set up a sound recorder applet using Java Sound API and LAME encoder. In DSL the applet is showing up but while tryin to record, I am getting a "No line matching interface TargetDataLine supporting format PCM_SIGNED, 44100.0 Hz, 16 bit, stereo, little-endian, audio data is supported." error. It seems to work in a VMware installation of Xubuntu. I am using Java5 for the development and JRE Version 5.0 Update 9.

Does DSL support PCM_SIGNED format?
