Can anyone direct me to a site where I can download and install the plug-in to enable XMMS to play MP3s?
Running DSL .7.2 on a Tosh. Libretto 70ct, no CDR. After reviewing forum information, was able to configure sound and get XMMS to play .wav files. MP3s are garbled.

Help please? Its my next hurdle to overcome. I'm just getting my feet wet with Linux. Great fun so far.

On my computer, XMMS plays MP3's just fine as is. Maybe something is wrong with your MP3's or your soundcard doesnt work well with Linux. You can go to www.xmms.org for some more information.

Has anyone been able to get XMMS to play WMA's?

I orignally had DSL on my 70CT as well and I found that the machine was just a bit underpowered to play mp3s

Under windows using winamp, I was able to turn down the conversion rate (22KHz was ok), then the mp3s skipped very little. The same may work under XMMS if you can turn down the conversion rate. mpg123 (the command line mp3 player) can only decode the mp3s at the full 44Khz and used up 100% cpu time :S Sorry for the bad tidings, but if you can get it to work better let us know!

Thanks for the reply from both of you. I ended up increasing the buffering to max. Libretto, after your post, I reduce the conversion rate to 22Khz as indicate. This enabled me to play MP3s. Tonite I plan to encode a test song to a lower bit rate from the 128 down to 96 and see if this makes a difference. Stay tuned!

Next Question: Need instructions on how to configure
(modeprobe ops3sa2, etc.) to load up. I tried the 'insmod' command but it just complained. Not sure what to do next.

Libretto,
Using the same MP3 encoded at 128 (that max'd out the CPU), I re-encoded it to 96. I observed that it reduced the CPU useage from 100% down to 75-85%. Seems to help a bit.
(or a BYTE).

Still looking for a way to get DSL to load the sound configuration upon boot.

Thoughts?
