I was able to watch 'Anger Management' last night in mplayer running from dsl (in a pc without hard drives no less!). Although this in-and-of-itself is just plain awesome, I cannot get the screen to scale like in xine (xine doesn't play dvd's though - no css).. If I use the fullscreen option, it just blanks out the screen around the video, instead of scaling the picture to the screen. Is this a known issue with mplayer, does my video driver suck, or am I just a wannabie M$ defector without a clue??

(ok maybe the last one sticks, but hey.. )

I have done some experimentation with the mplayer package.
No results on scaling up so far.

I don't know if this is an issue with the xserver DSL uses,
or if there IS a way to force it to scale up in size.

That was the reason I went with the zine player build,
to see if it would do the same thing...It didn't, as you know.

Curious why zine would do so well, and mplayer not..

yes i was wondering about this too.
mplayer was working so well until i found i couldnt go fullscreen.
i havent got zine yet but i'll get it now.

I think mplayer relies on the xv extension in order to go fullscreen. Xv is usually present in the fullblown XFree86 server, I don't think the kdrive servers has this functionality.

I believe you're right.
I'm just using the Woody packages for
libdvdnav,libdvdread,libdvdcss,and a w32codecs
pack installed with dpkg -i to watch dvds.
I find I need to scale down the output window
to reduce cpu load on my old machine,but thanks to
ke4nt,it's a sweet application.And you can do this
"live cd" too.

Now, before you delete the .deb's from your cache, use
cbaggers01's script to convert those buggers to a .dsl file
for the rest of us to enjoy!

Adraker,

I ran through synaptic quickly and did not find these libraries. Can you point me in the direction of how to add them please, otherwise if you have a .dsl I would be happy to test it out for you!

DSL pack can be made,
those debs were not from
Debian server,but as I recall
from another ftp server- do a search
involving "nerim.net"and "debian-marillat".
Drill down.W32 codecs pack alone comes
out to roughly 10 megs.So the dsl package
is rather large.But because it's just a bunch
of libraries and involves no config,it's very
easy to use cbagger01's excellent script
to make yourself a dsl pack.Or just install the debs.
Btw, don't forget dma enable for your drive.

I found the libs and used the script to create a dsl file. I had no problems yesterday watching dvd's with xine, but did not have the chance to try mplayer (was on my other mem stick).. I'll try it tonight and let you know how it works. I'm not sure if it fixes my original problem with no fullscreen in mplayer, but hey.. it's a decent workaround nonetheless!

This is what I do to enable fullscreen in mplayer:

gmplayer -vo sdl -fs

Works fine for me.

With the current mplayer extension, I added the following to ~/.mplayer/config:
fs=yes
zoom=yes

Apparently it may not give decent performance with older CPUs, but it seemed to work fine for me on a 1.8ghz/256mb.

This was tested with an MPG....I don't even know how to play DVDs on DSL yet :laugh:
