I am attempting an install of DSL

I have both Linux and XP partitions
and use a windows partition selector Acronis

Messages received 'cannot read sector 0' and 'linux not detected'

Is there a way round other than Grub in the MBR

When does those exact errors occur?

If it's due to using Acronis, you could also try their boot manager. (although I think they're software is linux-friendly... perhaps you're using an outdated version?)

EDIT: or is that what you meant by "windows partition selector"? If so, then the below advice is probably the course to follow :P

You still need to install a bootloader to the partition, unless Acronis can load a linux kernel straight?
