We have a bit of a community here, so I was thinking that I should expand the "water cooler" into several non-dsl related sub-categories. Any suggestions?

some off the tip of my head:linux in general linux (or general?) news hardware programming/scripting links (or maybe that would need only a single thread) lugs, conferences, and other meetings or community events Non-water-cooler: It's my humble opinion that the "how-to" section is rather pointless. Only a handful of threads are actually how-tos...most are questions which normally *should* be in "other help topics" or other forum. Perhaps it could be renamed, or described a little better than "how to do it"...people seem to think it's for posting questions about "how to do it". Off topic: The website as a whole could use a much more unified navigation system. It seems that every page you open has a unique set of nav links. Posted by adssse on July 28 2005,04:21
I agree with most of mikshaw's ideas. I think a General Linux, a News, Hardware and Programming/Scripting would all make nice additions. I really enjoy the forums and I guess I dont really have any complaints. Although on the topic of the site in general I often times have trouble finding what I am looking for, but that might be just me.

Or the how-to could be locked - and then information that works switched to that area.Oh wait, that's what the documentation site is for. Posted by andrewphoto on July 29 2005,12:30
A category where one can post when one sees DSL mentioned/reviewed ANYWHERE, even the smallest mention.E.g., DSL gets a BRIEF mention on P57 of Linux Format magazine came out 29th. July 2005. On P57 (review of Debian 3.1,) there's a concise graph of distros that hail from Debian. Even the smallest mention, in context, perhaps can provide the opportunity for valuable analysis. We need a few moderators to manage all the misplaced topics, and create a little more order.

I alway enjoy "Tips and Tricks" type reading. I have discovered a bunch of cool things that way. I have really gotten into frugal install, this seems like real inovation to me.David Posted by John on July 31 2005,08:01
Thanks for the suggestions guys I followed most of it. I closed the 'HowTo' forum because it really wasn't being used properly. I moved all the posts in there to the 'Other Help Topics' forum.I will also be adding more moderation soon. Posted by meo on Aug. 04 2005,14:02
Hi John! What do you mean when you say that the HOWTO wasn't used properly??? I think it is a MUSTHAVE section in any linux forum. I don't know what others think but I sincerely miss it (and would be very happy if the matter could be reconsidered). It's kind of contradictory for me to split a non DSL section into several sections and at the same time close a DSL section and move all the threads over to another section. To me it doesn't make any sense. Have fun, meo Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 04 2005,15:17
The HowTo was being used properly about 5% of the time (or less). Mostly it was just used as another place to post questions. There is the Tips and Tricks forum now, which I personally hope will be used by all who have howtos to share. I look at it as being the same as HowTo, but with a more accurate name (or at least more understandable for people who may not be completely fluent in English) |
