A small bug fix release for 4.2

* Optional menu creation in desktop.sh
* Updated dslinstall to reflect single floppy creation option
* Improved cleanup in exitcheck

This morning I downloaded dsl-4-2-1.iso from ibiblio.org:

Problems with Frugal Grub install, option 3.

I am told I have to 'fetch grub.dsl'

What/where is this?  Not present on 4.1.  Oh, and on 4.1 install, frugal grub was option 4.  On 4.2.1 option 4 is frugal lilo install which I did without looking and got a grub error 15 on trying to boot after the install....

Posted by dslrgm on Dec. 20 2007,19:35
The image I pulled down from the gatech ftp site worked.

I noticed that the gatech iso is dated 12-20, whereas the ibiblio.org is dated 12-19.

Tried 4.2.1 today.
Unable to mount sda1 with rightclick or with 'mount /mnt/sda1' with aterm when inserting usb card reader after computer booted.
error "mount: relocation error: undefined symbol: blkid_known_fstype"

If usb reader is inserted before booting it works.

Did not try this with 4.2.

The Getting Started page needs the section on Saving Your Configuration updated. It still refers to .xfiletool.lst as being in the home directory rather than /opt (the assumption from this is that .filetool.lst is also in the home directory)

There is a diff file for upgrading 4.2 to 4.2.1 at < http://linuxtracker.org/browse.php?cat=104 >

It is less than 300Kb

Thanks, I will update that information.

@Roberts

The battery name for my laptop is not recognised.

ls /proc/acpi/battery gives BAT1 as the battery type for my Acer Apire 3500 laptop.

I remember reading somewhere that you were requesting battery names.

Loading Dillo from the icon down the bottom comes up with an error

File not found: /usr/share/doc/dsl/getting-started.html

Yes, it should be getting_started, not getting-started.

Also, for me, apps in mydsl directory are loaded but not listed in the mydsl menu. My apps in mydsl/optional are listed correctly though.

Maybe I am missundrstanding how this is supposed to work.

why don't u put the .info of the optional togheter with the optional eventually dowloaded instead of in  /home/dsl ?

Make sure that you have updated .bash_profile and .torsmorc files.
Both are needed for the name extracted from /proc to be inserted into torsmo.

The typo has been reported and will be fixed.

Re: mydsl, I am not seeing such.

Are you running an upgrade? Can you test by booting with

base norestore

and then

norestore

@roberts

I am booting from a livecd, nothing saved to HD or USB key.

>>>Make sure that you have updated .bash_profile and .torsmorc files.
>>>Both are needed for the name extracted from /proc to be inserted into
>>>torsmo.

So does this still apply?

Thanks Phil

This is the line in the .tormsorc file

${color #ddd}Battery:  $color ${battery BAT1}

And this is what is displayed on screen

Battery: unknown 0%

Will check the laptop thread for info.

Regards Phil

Update: this is probably why my battery is not showing properly

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state
present: yes
ERROR: Unable to read battery status

1)hitting ctrl-alt-F1 and then ctrl-alt-F2 again I can see only for a sec another black screen with something written that I cannot read cause then I see again the desktop.
2)I have the mydsl optional on a  fat32 partition and during the boot process I see this message:
/usr/bin/desktop.sh: line 26: /mnt/hda1/mydsl/bin:$PATH".app: invalid argument
chmod: mnt/hda1/mydsl/bin:$PATH".app no such file or directory.
3) unplugging and replugging my usb pendrive gives error
4) the frugal grub install doesn't remove all the # from the beginning of the lines regarding windows, so windows cannot boot.

It would be helpful to know which MyDSL extension is giving you this error. From your post, it would appear that said extension is not standards compilance. But until I know which one, I cannot be sure.

Not much I can do to improve hotplug. It has already been discussed.

Thanks for the find with frugal_grub.sh. With the introduction of the "checkfs" entry caused the uncomment for windows to become skewed. Will correct.

Sometimes even if hotplug fails it is possible to mount maually the usb pendrive.
If I remember well the hotplug was working better in 4.2RC1.
What about kernel 2.4.31.1 (just guessing)?

There has been no change to any hotplug scripts.

I see. This extension is different than most.  It does not effect either menu. Both jwm and fluxbox menu items work as expected.  The issue is in the auto-creation of the icon shortcut in the mydsl folder. I will investigate further, i.e., likely to drop bash and use lua.

are u sure that this :
"Cleanup of usused files, modules, and directories (pnp, xfs, hfs, hfsplus, bfs, befs, adfs, ujs, minix, efs)"
has nothing to do with hotplug?

Posted by roberts on Dec. 26 2007,16:33
Those deleted were filesystem modules that were not even in 3.x.

I don't see a problem as long as umount is used and the same usb port is used.

If you like, boot DSL to runlevel 2 and see if you can capture any errors regarding anything missing.

boot: dsl 2 base norestore

The issue has been addressed by Klaus Knopper in knoppix.net forums. The /etc/fstab is being rebuilt. You can even read Klaus' comments in the hotplug script. Many others have noticed that sometimes the fstab is incorrectly rebuilt. But this is not new and we have been using and living with this.

3) unplugging and replugging my usb pendrive gives error

What does the error say? As Robert has mentioned, Knopper's script rewrites fstab in such a way that mount points change from, e.g., sda1 to sda and then tries to do a shotgun load of every filesystem module trying to find the right one for a non-partition partition (sda is a device not a partition). With the removal of the fs modules, they can't load -- which is just as well unless you need all of them and have access to all their progs (which, aside from reiserfs progs and ntfs progs extensions, DSL doesn't have). If you're getting errors related to those modules not being found, it's no problem. In fact, it's a good thing. I was wondering where I was starting xfs daemons and finally traced it back to use of various USB media in different orders that caused hotplug to rewrite fstab and start daemons. I use an alias that opens /etc/fstab in vim as sudo so I can quickly re-edit fstab whenever I (re)insert USB devices.

DSL 4.2.1 does not mount DVD.
Error message states:
Code Sample
unknown filesystem UDF

"Old" DSL 3.3 does mount DVD on the same hardware.

Can someone help me with this issue, please?

Posted by roberts on Dec. 27 2007,16:46
udf was not recently cut from 4.x as it was never created for 2.4.31 kernel and therefore never in any 4.x version.

What that tells me, is that udf was not part of the kernel source tree. udf was/is likely an other sourced module.

I can mount my data dvd fine. But then it was created by DSL and the Tk/DVD extension.

What is your source for such a format?

Initially I tried
Code Sample
mount /dev/cdrom

then I booted DSL 3.3 and found in its /etc/mtab something like:
Code Sample
/dev/cdrom udf ro,nosuid,user=dsl /mnt/mountpoint

then I tried in DSL 4.2.1
Code Sample
mount -t udf /dev/cdrom

the system returned the same error.
This DVD was written under Win32 OS.

Do I need to get tkdvd.dsl to read it?
Could you please type mount command and options which should be used under DSL 4.2.1 to read UDF/DVD?

Posted by lucky13 on Dec. 27 2007,19:05
You didn't mount that dvd like that in 3.3, either, because your command is incomplete. You need a mount point (directory/file) where you can mount the device (/dev is device, not mount point). Copy your fstab here and see if and where it configured a mount point.

Edit: If you already have the "/mnt/mountpoint" entry in fstab, you could mount it at:
mount /mnt/mountpoint

If not, then the manual mount command would be:
mount -t udf /dev/cdrom /mnt/mountpoint

Where mount point is whichever mountpoint you set up there (if one wasn't made by script).

According to < this security report > and the < changelog for 2.4.13 > UDF is part of the kernel sources, and has been for a while...

(those two came first up from google)

I used the following mount commands in DSL 3.3:
Code Sample

sudo mount /dev/cdrom
sudo mount -t udf /dev/cdrom /mnt/auto/cdrom
Both commands mount UDF filesystem in DSL 3.3 successfully

I still need help in mounting DVD with UDF filesystem in DSL 4.2.1. I see file udf.o in < fs-modules.lst >
Should I have fs-modules installed to get UDF support in DSL 4.2.1?

Posted by roberts on Dec. 28 2007,15:20
I stand corrected. I did compile the module and I removed it while constructing the very first 4.0.

I will replace it in v4.2.2. I will issue 4.2.2. today.

If you like you can download the mentioned tgz and unpack and then insmod udf.o

Posted by curaga on Dec. 28 2007,15:22
Oh. So udf was included in the cut modules afterall. Yes rainall, go get fs-modules.tgz

Edit: I should really learn to refresh before posting :)
