I was digging through Trinux the other day when it hit me ...trinux pkg files are basic and .tar and gzip'd up. So why couldn't I just try and install some on my DSL .. So i'm gonna try it and i'll get back with the results.. Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 02 2005,20:29
Just about any pre-compiled package can be installed on just about any distro. There are some issues, though, that can cause failure in the package to run. Some distros have different versions of certain files than other distros....sometimes this can cause runtime problems, particularly if one distro doesn't even have a file that is standard on another distro. Just because it's a tar.gz doesn't mean it will install in the same way. Many package types include post-install scripts or config files that set up your environment so its ready to run the program. These files are typically handled by the package manager. myDSL has no such ability. Of course I'm not saying you shouldn't try it...quite the opposite, actually. The more flexible DSL can become, the better. |
