I know this has been addressed countless times, but I'm so tantalisingly close to getting Flash running properly on DSL that I have to ask.First off, I just wanted to ask if anyone had got Flash 9 to work on DSL yet? (Just to be sure) Then, I'll get on to my attempted workaround... So I've installed FirefoxPortable with a Flash plugin via Wine, which seems to do the trick - Flash 9 works. However, the fonts are completely screwed up. I've tried every version of Wine available in MyDSL, but all yield the same results. Can anyone enlighten me as to either how to install Flash on a Linux version of Firefox or how to get FirefoxPortable working properly under Wine? Posted by jpeters on Feb. 08 2008,19:59
Have you tested flash 9 thoroughly? Check it out on several sites to make sure it doesn't end up crashing. (I would doubt that Wine includes all the necessary libraries) Posted by Browncoat on Feb. 08 2008,22:19
I haven't tested it all that thoroughly - only on one website (which is why I needed it in the first place). It seems alright on that one site, though.Any ideas on font correction in Wine? Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Feb. 09 2008,02:31
Probably missing the correct fonts... so it defaults to an different one. I remember having to install some typical truetype fonts for wine some time ago...

Very interesting...you can indeed get flash 9 running via wine, although mine stalled out after about 30 seconds, and then it's all about hour glasses....at least it didn't crash. (I see what you mean about the fonts)Edit: running Firefox via wine has more problems then just the fonts! Edit2: On my laptop, it maxes out the CPU. Posted by Browncoat on Feb. 09 2008,16:00
Yeah - it maxes out the CPU on my slow computer, too. It's not ideal, but it's the best I've managed to do so far. It's pretty intensive.Has anyone ever tried anything similar with another browser like Opera? Is it even possible to do something similar? Posted by jpeters on Feb. 09 2008,16:45
It looks like a DSL version that supports flash 9 is in the works, and will most likely work better than using an emulator.

What emulator..?In any case, (repeating from other forums threads) it seems that most users avoid flash9 and use 7 if possible. Others who use 9 tend to have problems, though some have reported that it works for them. Posted by jpeters on Feb. 09 2008,22:03
Yea, I know....as the name suggests, "Wine Is Not an Emulator," and is supposed to, in some cases, work better than the linux version. That has not been my experience, however, although it comes in handy when a linux version of an app isn't available (if it works). I can understand preferring flash 7, but not having access to an increasing number of links (or sites) that require flash 9 is another matter. Posted by a2brute on May 07 2008,03:35
I'm a little confused... This is the first time I came across this topic because I just installed DSL 3.4.11 on an older sony vaio desktop along with firefox 2.0.14 and flash 9, and I found youtube crashes the browser. So I was looking for help. However, I see here that people have been having trouble running flash 9 with DSL. I had not run into that before this. I am currently working on a P3 866 machine with 512MB RAM that has been running DSL 3.01 for a long time with firefox 2 and flash 9 with no problems whatsoever. First, I installed firefox 2 from the tar.gz available at mozilla.com. Then I had to get ALSA working on the computer. And then I installed flash from source (after installing GCC and proper libraries). No problems since. However, no I am having this problem with the Sony, where flash 9 has no sound, and video works fine with almost any site but youtube. If anyone has any idea, please let me know. I know that ALSA is working because I have sound when using XMMS. Thanks. Posted by lucky13 on May 07 2008,12:39
When did Adobe release Flash source code? Posted by a2brute on May 07 2008,18:41
My bad. You are correct, I meant to say installed the binary available via adobe's website. I make the mistake of immediately associating anything not in a package with "source". And it has been a long time since I set it up. But anyhow, it is still working for me with the combination of DSL 3.0.1, FF 2.0.0.3, and Flash 9. Can't remember doing anything special. Oh, I do have the flashblock add-on installed, so I only run the flash I want, but I commonly watch youtube and google videos with it. Posted by jpeters on May 08 2008,05:49
Well, I just tried it with FF 2.0.0.14 and it crashed. (DSL 4.X, gtk2). |
