hd Install to ram ?Forum: Other Help Topics Topic: hd Install to ram ? started by: tleadley Posted by tleadley on Dec. 05 2007,07:23
Here is one for the community,How would one go about getting DSL to do an install to a ram disk instead of a hard drive. I am not talking about running "toram" as DSL is currently set up to do. Actually do a hd install to a ramdisk. PC's have a tonne of ram now days, heck I have a gig on my pc. This would actually be a solution for an earlier post of mine. tleadley (\ /) (O.o) (> <) Posted by curaga on Dec. 05 2007,07:36
But it would only last as long as you have power; how about electric cuts?Even the best UPS cannot hold too long.. Posted by mikshaw on Dec. 05 2007,13:37
I think he was implying that the install would occur with every boot, which would be no more at risk than a regular toram system in the event of a power outage.I thought for a minute that it could be as simple as extending /etc/init.d/mkwriteable to copy rather than link, and then unmounting KNOPPIX but I'm not certain. You might consider looking at that script, dsl-config & knoppix-autoconfig, and maybe the harddrive install scripts. Posted by tleadley on Dec. 05 2007,16:40
Thanks mikshaw, I was just going around in circles, chasing my own tail as I tend to do sometimes. Brain works faster than reason...lol I was thinking I was going to have to hack and slash DSL, in the back of my mind I know there is a simpler solution without re-writing a lot of scripts. I will give that a look into, sounds easier than what I had in mind. :-) tleadley (\ /) (O.o) (> <) Posted by humpty on Dec. 06 2007,01:31
sounds cool. let us know if it works!i had a thought like that in the past. i was thinking that if i could create a ramdisk in dos, maybe i could copy the knoppix image on it and boot using that. never tried it though. perhaps you could just do the copy after boot, unmount knoppix, and re-mount to ramdisk? I think just making it do the install in bootlocal.sh, chrooting into it, and using depmod should work..
