I read up on the off-site link to the page about putting DSL on a usb stick. I tried it, installed fine and everything, but now I realize that the DSL used in that package is 0.3, which is old. He gives instructions on the site on how to modify all the items yourself, but I cannot seem to do it without messing up somewhere. If someone could modify the (working) DSL 0.5 iso to boot off a bootable usb device, I would be very greatful.

1. Install the bootloader (Syslinux) on the USB drive.
2. Extract the boot.img file to USB Drive.
3. Change linuxrc & add usb kernel modules to modules folder available in miniroot.gz.

Easy step is as follows
1. Extract the usb bootable package as mentioned in the off-site link.
2. Replace the old KNOPPIX file with 0.5 KNOPPIX file.

If, like me you have an older computer which doesn't have the option of booting from a USB device, then you might try using the boot disk for RUNT linux. It's kernel 2.4.22 and by default will boot /dev/sda1. Works great for my mini-distro based on Slackware 9.1.

An even simpler approach is to download flonix-usb and follow the instructions.

The replace the flonix Knoppix with the DSL Knoppix file.  Worked like a charm.
