A while ago, I installed DSL on my sister's computer, and it's been working fine for the most part, except for some memory problems (and it's a VERY old computer, so that's kind of expected, right?). But yesterday, Sam (my sister) called me, and starts yelling at me, "Libby, why'd you have to go and put Linux on my computer? I want Windows 95 back!!!! You broke my computer!" Eventually she calmed down and told me what had happened, and I promised her I'd ask here and call her back once she got out of school and tell her what to do.This is the error message she got when she booted up: Hostname 2.08 giving up xinit: connection refused (err no 111): unable to connect to xserver xinit: no such process (err no 3): server error What should Sam do? She's only 13 and knows even less about Linux than I do. Is there an easy way to fix it? Posted by hawki on Mar. 22 2004,17:34
HiIt sounds like your running from a hd-install. The first thing I would try is running from cd and see how far it gets. If it runs, figure out what the user has changed. I know the user never is at fault, but check. I thought of something else. If it runs from cd check to see if the disk is full. Old systems have small disks and they will fill up. This will create problems booting. Posted by Libby on Mar. 22 2004,23:57
Thanks Hawki, but I'm still stuck!Turns out she hadn't used that computer since I was at home and trying to figure out how to get the swap thing to work. So if anybody messed it up, it was me -- only, I didn't do anything except mkswap and swapon. So I don't see how I could've messed anything up. Sam lost the CD, so that's kind of a bust. I'm pretty sure space wasn't an issue. When Windows was on there, she had plenty room for a whole bunch of games and stuff. Posted by roberts on Mar. 23 2004,02:46
Sounds like your command to start the X server is messed up.You should probably re-run the xsetup.sh. So after the error messages and you are returned to a prompt try thissudo xsetup.sh |
