I am a real newbie trying to get a handle on Linux, so if this problem seems real dumb, please accept my apologies.I have installed DSL on a hard drive installed in a Compaq 300 desktop pc. I have partitioned the HD to HDA1=350mb (primary) and HDA2=approx 150mb whiich is set up as the swap.
My intention is to get DSL installed then change this HD into an even older 486dx66 which does not have CD booting capabilities.
My problem is that although the installation seemed to go well, and the booting up to login seems to be trouble free, after logging in as root the boot process seems to halt and appears to be waiting for a command of some kind with a prompt as follows: root@tty1[root]#
What do I do now?

try: xsetup.shto set up the X-server (display)
then: startx
to start it

be carefull Theo.once you have installed dsl on thta HD you may find other differences when you move it to the older 486.
the boot up will recognize a completely different hardware, that may be compliant or may be not...
another solution could be knoppix poorman's install.
you copy the .iso file to the would-swap partition (hd2, that you must set as ext2, not swap) then you put the hd on the 486.
Thanks to a boot floppy you launch the boot process from the .iso file that you have copied on the hd. This will work as if you were booting from cd.
you set up everything, when it's done you hd-install to the main partition (hda1) .
once it's done, you can reboot from hd, and format hd2 as swap.
reboot again and tell the boot process to find you swap partition and to turn it on.
and..that should work.
