Check out the audacity.dsl package.. in the repository..
The challenge you will find with true multi-tracking in the linux environment will be the latency issues, and lack of support for simultaneous audio streams with the oss sound drivers in DSL
DSL was never designed , and certainly never 'tweaked' for audio recording uses.
Have you looked into the Ardour or DeMuDi distros ? They have low-latency kernels, JACK audio support, Alsa sound servers, and many fine applications already built into the distros. (i.e., no compiling ) , and they release updated distros frequently, with an active musicianship/engineer user baseand forum for support.
The Ardour is red-hat based, and the DeMuDi is Debian based.
