DSL3.0.1

I've got an Intel MB, with Realtek AC97 integrated audio. DSL does not recognize this. Loading ALSA support using the DSL Extension Tool does not work - I still get "..audio device not found.." errors. (Yes, I booted with "dsl alsa", and loaded gnu-util, dsl-dpkg and alsadebs)

Using JB4x4's ALSA-Drivers-1.0.1.1.dsl and modprobe commands, I can successfully get nice sound out of the audio system. Problem is the mixer volume is either off or on maximum. Neither XMMS or MPlayer or the system mixer allow volume adjustments other than mute or full blast...

Any ideas?

I did a little checking, and it appears the Realtek AC97 chip would be compatible with the module snd-intel8x0. The command that should start the card would be, modprobe snd-intel8x0;modprobe snd-pcm-oss;modprobe snd-mixer-oss;modprobe snd-seq-oss .

I checked and the module snd-intel8x0.o is in the ~/pci directory and the permissions match the other modules.

I can modprobe the ~pci/hda/snd-hda-intel device. Again, following your example command syntax I get beautiful sound - just no volume control...

DSL3.0.1 boot from CD
"dsl toram alsa"
Testing repository ALSA drivers installed.

Sound works, but volume is either muted (dmix=0) or 100%...(dmix>0). Similarly XMMS, MPlayer volume controls do not work properly - it's either mute or 100%.

I still have not resolved this, despite repeated googling. If anyone has any suggestions as to what utility might be needed to implement volume control in ALSA, I and a few others who have posted would appreciate it. Maybe you have ideas on what glitches to look for in the output from lspci or lsmod, or what deb package to add?

I guess I will add my lsmod output to this when I get back to my dsl machine.

I'm a neophyte but shouldn't "alsadebs" be declared when alsadebs is loaded?
And declare "alsa" when regular alsa is loaded?

cbagger01 in http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/dsl-n/f/viewpost/1193.html
says alsadebs is OK with DSLv3.01 kernel (2.4.26) (and all earlier?).
I'm too dumb to diff the src files and really get the meaning of alsa variance.

But this works for me. Too simple? Wrong? -- k
