I booted up DSL the other day for the first time and really liked what I saw.  I however, encountered a few problems.  I don't know if it was my hardware or what, but when I tried to open a shell or a program it would take like 20 or 30 seconds before anything appeared on the screen.  Then, once the window appeared it took another 10 seconds to show a prompt.  I have a Pentium 175 mhz processor, and like 64mb of ram.  I thought that it would run better than this on it.  Also, the computer doesn't recognize my harddrive at all, so I can't do a HD install. Does anyone know what the problem might be?  Also, if my computer sits for a while without being used the screen will go blank (kind of like power saving mode or screen saver or something) but it never comes out of this and I end up having to reboot and start over.  Does anyone out there have any ideas of how to fix this?  Thanks

Sounds like something isn't quite right to me.  Maybe you have a bad CD burn?  Or fried hardware?  How are other OSs running on it?

Well, it used to run win95 ok but slow (compared to today's computers)  Now, slackware ran pretty slowly on, it but that was trying to load KDE and it went through the install pretty fast.  This computer has sat untouched on my desk for about six months.  And as far as not seeing the hard drive, that is logical since I removed it a while ago and forgot about it.  I don't think this contributes to it running slow, I will also try putting in a different cd drive to see if that will help it run faster.

I put a different cd drive in last night and it ran great, it was a little slow at times, but it never took more than a few seconds to load up programs.  It was also much quieter.  I'm not sure if my old hard drive works or not, but as soon as I get around to it, I am going to try a HD Install.
