You can boot from CD and it will not touch the hard drive. At the first boot prompt, just press enter.
And on version 0.5 and up, if you have a floppy or usb pendrive, you can even store your setup information using the backup menu option. Then upon the next boot from CD you can at the boot prompt boot: knoppix restore That way you can use the system on anybodys computer without using their hard drive and still have your setup.
