DSL Ideas and Suggestions :: Mplayer

Well, I just went through my list of MPlayer codecs (had them backed up on a HD I forgot I had) and I found that removing a lot of the files slims it down tremendously.  I dunno what each codec does for you, but here's a list of the ones that I think might be necessary.  If any aren't, lemme know and I'll cut 'em out:

Code Sample

14_4.so.6.0         28_8.so.6.0          3ivX.qtx                 acelpdec.ax
atrc.so.6.0           avimszh.dll            avizlib.dll                cook.so.6.0
ddnt.so.6.0          divx.dll                 divx_c32.ax           divxa32.acm
divxc32.dll           divxdec.ax            drv2.so.6.0            drv3.so.6.0
drv4.so.6.0          mcdvd_32.dll        mpg4c32.dll           mpg4ds32.ax
msscds32.ax        msvidc32.dll          sipr.so.6.0             tokf.so.6.0
tokr.so.6.0           vid_3ivX.xa          vid_3ivX_d3.5_linuxELFx86c6.xa
wma9dmod.dll      wmadmod.dll        wmspdmod.dll         wmv8ds32.ax
wmv9dmod.dll     wmvdmod.dll         wmvds32.ax

Using all of those codecs, including Quicktime, the gzipped codec file size is 5.7 MB.  If you cutout Quicktime, the file size drops down to 3.6 MB.  That's using gzip -9.  If you use bzip, which is slightly better at compression, you can compress the codecs tar file down to 3.4M without Quicktime.  But Quicktime is not that common for the average end user, so you don't really need it.

So if anyone can see any others to get rid of, lemme know and we might be able to do something with this - because MPlayer is a very good way to view media.

Now that I just went and did a nice lil configure for it, it gives me this lovely error:

Error: X11 support required for GUI comilation.  Since we're gonna want a GUI for it, that could cause a problem...

Hi there :o)
A GUI for mplayer? I never use on on my main machine even...
I still think mplayer is a bit big - not only because of its size but also beacuse of its requirements... on the othe rhand - I once missed a nice player after istalling dsl :o)
As long as there are 5 MB totally free its a nice ADD but I'd prefer smaller, numerous nice tools instead...
Just my opinion.Greetings :)
