DSL Ideas and Suggestions :: UBCD and DSL together
Hello, I am writing on behalf of our group at www.ultimatebootcd.com Over at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ultimatebootcd we are discussing enhancements. With 55 utilities on one ISO (a 45mb torrent d/load) we really need a multimedia help docs viewer... Someone suggeted adding a browser, I suggested a Arachne/Bart combo, but the group wants to stay away from any M$ content. Thats fine, so the idea now is to use a Links/BasicLinux combo... Here is my question:
UBCD still lacks good emergency web/ftp/samba access and the ability to write to NTF$ volumes - wouldn't it be better to swap BasicLinux/Links for for an "empty-as-possible" version of DSL? Are there other GUI options smaller and/or better?
Apps to reduce would be: - Glinks or Dillo (which adheres to more web standards?) - Scite, Zile, Paint, Xcalc, ABS - Naim, Links,SQlite, PIM, Netdir, gphone - All games
BTW, the ultimate goal is to not only do this, but also to combine the results on a free BizCard with less than 20 Open-source, "best-of-breed" utilities already found on UBCD. (Now that will really be some CD for a techs wallet!) - Cliff We can call it DSBC (Damn Small Boot CD)

Wouldn't it be EVEN BETTER to ask if you can join John in developing a version IN PARALLEL with DSL? Like you said, a DS-UBCD.
I mean, if you just gut the apps out of DSL and reload it with your stuff (not a seriously tough job), you are just forking DSL and then you have all the development stuff on your hands (a seriously tough job). There has to be a better way than that. Take a look at the rescue version of Feather Linux if Rob has it still listed on his download page. Its another fork of DSL. http://featherlinux.berlios.de ...... it a bolshie server an not always accessable.Hi again, sorry for not adding detail - I'll try: UBCD is already a 106-meg ISO (compressed to 45-meg so MajorGeeks and Torrent volunteers save bandwidth). You may consider it an ISO of boot images, each of which, has it's own fame - unmodified, but carefully scripted and tested by Victor Chew to launch via CDShell. As he says "it's his hobby.." and the group members support him.
>Wouldn't it be EVEN BETTER to ask if you can join John in developing a version IN PARALLEL with DSL?
I misunderstand 'version' here. My thought is that a current stable DSL, slightly lightened, with a disclaimer to such is all that's warranted to keep things light with no continous developement required.

Sorry for exuberance, in my zeal to help, I get off-track or desviado.
> I mean, if you just gut the apps out of DSL and reload it with your stuff..
Our stuff on the DSL image? No, it's not our work, our stuff (tech help docs) would just be in a browsable folder on the container CD.
> you are just forking DSL..
No, I talk of a mod to an existing release. Again, that's the reason for this topic. If concensus here is viable, then sure, I will present it to Victor Chew (UBCD lead). It is not my part to ask John, I'm not at that level.

I haven't found it yet and Feather-Linux is 64meg. At present, UBCD includes a boot image with text only web access, but no PPPoE. Clearly, what's there is not in the same league as DSL and would scare many Win-techs to even try downloading missing driver's, etc..
IMHO, adding a DSL boot image to UBCD would be an eye-opener to many Win-tech's and further some Linux experience to otherwise closed minds..A few points: Firstly, Feather Linux is normally 64Mb, but the console-only rescue edition is only 50Mb. Secondly, Feather isn't a fork of DSL - it's a project with similar motives and a similar size.
