DSL Ideas and Suggestions :: accessing lilo boot prompt

is it just me or does mkliloboot set an extremely short window for calling up the BOOT: prompt after an HD install? is there a reason it's set so short? can it be a little longer? it'd be nice if i could pass boot params a little more easily.
