DSL Ideas and Suggestions :: bitlbee

Hi, I posted this on the forum some time ago, but I think not many saw it. So I registered myself to be able to make this new topic [I hate registering ;) ]:

Just for your information.
You can chat on msn and any other network using any irc client and bitlbee. There are public bitlbee servers as well, so you just have to have an irc client installed to chat on msn.

It lets you connect to all those IM networks trough your irc client, or even on a web interface like bitlbee-web.pethippo.co.uk and if you can't install it you can just connect to an irc bitlbee server (im.everdot.org or look here: http://www.bitlbee.org/main.php/servers.html)

and see this short howto: http://linuxreviews.org/software/irc/bitlbee/

in short:
/connect im.everdot.org
/j #bitlbee
register your_password (next time identify your_password)

Jabber: account add jabber you@jabber.org yourpassword
MSN : account add msn you@hotmail.com yourpassword
ICQ: account add oscar 648244897 yourpassword login.icq.com
AIM: account add oscar 321454897 yourpassword login.oscar.aol.com

account list         to view what accounts are saved and their status

account on          to log in

---------------
I find it very useful and only have an IRC client installed :) .
Bitlbee+irssi really rocks.

That was my post. Now I think it would be great to use the power of bitlbee in DSL. But without installing it. I'd add a submenu for bitlbee with 3 links executing an irc client which connects to a big bitlbee public server (links to 3 of them, so there's a big chance they are online).
Example: 'aterm -e tinyirc im.everdot.org'
I don't know if that's possible with other irc clients, but it probably is.
The best thing (but not necessary) would be to have it ask for your nickname before the irc client connects to the bitlbee server. That could be done with a little script I guess.

And then add a little howto for bitlbee in for example the submenu, just a short note like I just wrote in this post.

I hope you'll consider bitlbee. It would require only some bytes.

can you use MSN-filetransfer using bitlbee?
Henk, look at the bitlbee FAQ.

grtz

what does the FAQ say?
No?
todo?

it says no because the developers have no need for file transfer and not many seem to request it. It's a TODO, but of very low priority
