DSL Ideas and Suggestions :: Network (PXE) version of DSL?
I see no reason why it can't be made, but why not create take the CDROM image, convert it to initrd image (large one, but I've seen 19-20MB images before), and use it for TFTP/PXE boot using it?
Even better, create a smart startup script that can automatically mount a remote NFS/SMB /home directory and even better, get the passwd/shadow/group from there.
If anyone have any ideas, I'll be happy to contribute some free time.
Cheers,
Gilboa
Nothing?!?!
Please look for SYSLINUX clone PXELINUX (or something like that)
It's all discribed and documented at SYSLINUX's homepage...
----------SERVER----------
TFTP server with file_size (or something like that: )
DHCP/BOOTP server.
-----------Client----------
Ethernet card w/ Intel 1.99 Network booting
I only read that very fast because I was looking for syslinux for my USB FlashDrive DSL install...but I hope, I did something good for netDSL
I normaly use the RedHat rescue image and set it up as a PXE boot.
But I rather have a full Linux instead. And damn small is perfect for it.
Cheers,
Gilboa
It would be desirable to not have to an NFS share in some situations but it looks like the mini boot kernel and the main filesystem would have to be combined into one file and read into memory. I am not sure if this can easily be done. There is a version of puppy that is in this form but I have not found info about how to create a version like it.
