DSL Ideas and Suggestions :: Colour-depth dependent icons...
Just a thought, no idea how it could be implemented, but could there be some sort of system that changes which icons you use depending on which colour depth you choose at startup? ie., if you are only using 8bit, the system uses the current icons, but if you use 16bit+, it changes the icons to something more high-colour, hopefully with a consistent look to them?
I could maybe work on some variants of the icons for high-colour use... I'm liking those aqua-ish, shiny-ball types...
I'm sure it could be implemented, but the concept "damn small" is contrary to such a setup. Having multiple choices for something which is unnecessary to begin with is just a redundant waste of precious space, and I imagine it would be more appropriate for individual users to set up things like this for their own use.
Hmm, how about a .dsl extension? So then you have your standard icons in the base setup, and can add the "extended icon set" if you are going over the 50MB size, which would probably be the case with anyone wanting eye-candy anyway (eg., GIMP, themes, firefox...)
Sounds like a plan, go ahead and put it together!
As for eye candy available now, there are an awful lot of themes in the repository, and tons more of FreshMeat

Here's an idea I was toying with last night, trying to get some sort of process happening...
(DAMNIT, board doesn't seem to let me link to png or something like that, so here's just links instead of images...)
FireFox icon
GIMP icon
CD Burning icon
Bit Torrent icon
SciTe icon
Media icon
They should have alpha transparency, haven't actually tried them under DSL yet...
Let me know yay or nay
