DSL Ideas and Suggestions :: Move all apps to MyDSL

I think it would be better to move everything apart from the base system (and tools for getting an internet connection, and the MyDSL browser) to MyDSL.

This way people could choose to have only the apps that they want installed. This way the base system could be even smaller, which is always good. People using the toram frugal install wouldn't be loading unnecessary apps every time they boot. I think it also seems more logical than the current situation where some apps are included in the OS download while others are in MyDSL.

At the moment there are two browsers and seveal text editors, etc. included. These are included because some people will want to use Dillo while others will want Firefox, but I know I am only going to use one of each, so with my suggestion I could just download the ones I want and end up with a more efficient system.

Thanks for making such a great OS :)

That's been considered, but there are folks without a net connection. They could do nothing on DSL with only internet tools :(
fluppet, you can always remaster with just the apps you want. There are several step-by-step remastering guides available online (use Google) as well as here in the forums. For now, that's probably your best option.

But they could download the apps they want at the same time they are downloading DSL and put them on the CD, or wherever they are booting from...

A 'default' package of MyDSL apps (containing all of the current ones) could also be available to download for those who don't know what to choose.

Thanks for the suggestion lucky13. I was just really thinking about it as what seemed like a good idea for DSL rather than something I was very concerned about for my own installation.

As Curaga said, some people don't have a net connection. Others might be on a very limited dialup. These people might opt for mail-order DSL, or have gotten it from a friend.

It has been suggested before to do something similar to this, specifically to separate the non-essential applications into one or more extensions while still providing those extensions as part of the ISO and installed by default. A user who wanted to remove them could easily do so with a MyDSL CD remaster (mkmydsl) without the need to modify KNOPPIX. I kinda like this idea myself.

However, I'm guessing there are a few possible reasons why this will probably not happen:
1. Robert has his hands full with existing plans for both DSL and DSL-N.
2. It is not a high priority, since DSL is already a tiny distro.
3. It is not a desirable option, since DSL is already a tiny distro.
