DSL Ideas and Suggestions :: Why are you still using libc6?
I wonder why dsl is not compiled against some small
libc library like uClibc and dietlibc,it could save damnsmall space since libc size is about 15 Mb!!
maybe it will open rooms for more space and make dsl smaller
on the other hand it need that all the dsl extentions be compiled against uClibc and dietlibc.
Here are some points:
- the glibc was taken straight from the knoppix build I believe
- not all applications are compatible with uclibc.
- every app would have to be compiled from scratch (and no apt repository)
- you couldn't use proprietary binaries.
Although using the smaller alternatives may save space, I think the positives not changing this is better. This path may be of interest for a truly embedded version of DSL though. Nothing's stopping you from trying it out yourself though.
I don't know about you, but if I had spent the last 3(?) years developing a linux distro I wouldn't want to go back and start all over again just to save a couple MBs.
