This is probably a naive question, but why is DSL still using kernel 2.4.26? kernel.org says that 2.4.32 is now available.size
grab version 2.4 it has kernel 2.4.31 if you want a closer kernel

A couple of corrections....
Size isn't really much of an issue when comparing various 2.4.x kernels. Where DSL is concerned it is more an issue with losing some of the older hardware that DSL strives to support.
DSL 2.4 has kernel 2.4.26. If you want the 2.4.31 kernel you'll need to jump back to DSL 2.1b.oops, i didn't have any coffee yet when i wrote that one.lol
